Our Volunteers Make a Difference
- Friday, 02 October 2020
Every day volunteers make a difference at Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, from maintaining our beautiful gardens to helping our care teams in Day Hospice and the Adult In-Patient Unit.
Over recent months, we have missed the buzz and hive of activity our volunteers bring to the hospice. With our shops closed, care services suspended and to protect our volunteers only a small group of volunteers have been supporting the key workers at the hospice.
However, with changes to guidelines the hospice has been able to welcome back our volunteers on a phased basis as our shops re-open and gardens have some TLC during the summer months.
Karen Nixon, Voluntary Services Co-ordinator, explains, “It’s been a strange year and not how we planned. Just before lockdown we were in Penrith recruiting for our shop in the town and had been doing really well.
“During lockdown we have had four volunteers who have continued within their roles in supporting different departments across the hospice. Our other volunteers have all remained at home and safe as we kept them up to date with changes at the hospice and any developments with their volunteering role.
“Our shops are beginning to re-open, which is brilliant as we welcome back some of our retail volunteers. Unfortunately, at the moment we do not have any fixed time scales for other volunteers returning to their roles as there are lots of other factors which will impact upon this.
“From speaking to many of our volunteers I know that most of them are keen to get back to their roles as they look for a piece of normality. As we welcome back our volunteers we will be providing lots of support and training to help them adjust to the changes which we have and will be implementing.
“Throughout lockdown and since restrictions have been lifted, we have been overwhelmed with applications from people just wanting to help the hospice in any way that they can, which is amazing. We are keeping in touch with all these volunteers as new opportunities open up across the charity.”
All the staff, patients and families at Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw are looking forward to welcoming back our volunteers when it is safe to do so. If you would like to find out more about volunteering at the hospice, please click here or contact Karen Nixon on 01228 810801.
Patricia Livsey, Chief Executive, added, “We are looking forward to when you can be back working with us and supporting the hospice in the amazing ways which you have done all this time. Without you we just wouldn’t survive.
"We are really looking forward to seeing you in the near future and we will welcome you with open arms."
