Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update 13.03.2020
- Friday, 13 March 2020
It is with regret that, after full review of the NHS guidelines and in consultation with other healthcare providers, we have taken the decision to suspend our Adult Day Hospice and Children’s Hospice. Our Adult In Patient Unit, offering round the clock care, will remain open.
Day Hospice will close from 16th March, whilst Jigsaw, our children’s hospice, will continue to care for those children and young people receiving respite care up until 14th March, their pre-planned day of discharge. Children and young adults who may be in need of end of life care, will be cared for on our Adult In Patient Unit.
This decision has been taken as the symptoms of coronavirus may be more severe in people with weakened immune systems, older people, and those with long-term and life-limiting illnesses.
It is important in the current and ever-changing coronavirus situation that we take all reasonable steps to protect the wellbeing of those using our services, our staff and volunteers.
As with all other healthcare providers, we expect our staff absence levels to increase as coronavirus continues to spread, and this action allows for both care and business continuity. To ensure safe staffing levels for patients, staff from both service areas will be diverted to our adult inpatient unit to care for those patients with the most complex needs and those who are at end of life.
Some aspects of our family care service, such as Counselling, Complementary Therapy and Social Worker home visits, will also be affected. We’ll be working closely with our partners in the community to identify those patients who may be at risk and support them as much as we can.
Doing the best we can to look after our patients is always our priority. In responding appropriately to the risk of infection from coronavirus, we believe the above actions will help to maintain an environment that remains as low risk as possible for those most vulnerable.
Our services will be frequently reviewed with the aim of returning to full service capacity as soon as possible, but only when it is safe to do so.
As a charity we are continually overwhelmed by the support shown by local people towards the hospice, and your understanding and cooperation during these challenging times is appreciated.
For advice on visiting the hospice, please click here, visit our Facebook page or call reception on 01228 810801.
Our fundraising activities remain unaffected at this moment in time, and our shops will do their best to remain open, however, this too remains under constant review. We rely on the generous support of volunteers to assist in running the shops, therefore there may be times when we’re unable to open and we advise on calling ahead before planning a visit. For any external events raising money in aid of the hospice, please contact the organisers directly for further advice and guidance.
If you have any queries about the above, please contact Trish Livsey, CEO.
